The colour blue in interior design

Shades of blue are associated with freshness, the sky and the sea, and therefore help to create a light and peaceful atmosphere. They fill a space with a sense of freedom, blend well with natural materials and are ideal for interiors where comfort and harmony are key.

Colour NCS S 2030–R80B

A medium-light, subtly saturated blue with a distinct cool blue undertone. In a room, it comes across as cool but not harsh, of medium brightness and with a slight hint of ‘soft blue sky’. In design, this colour serves as a versatile base: it has a calming effect, makes a room appear larger and brighter, highlights natural textures (wood, linen, metal) and looks equally good on large surfaces and in details.

Two similar shades:

Colour NCS S 2030 R70B

A little less blue, closer to a soft blue-violet. This is a ‘warmer’ shade, which is easier to pair with pink, lavender and warm beige accents in romantic and Scandinavian interiors

Colour NCS S 3030 R80B

Slightly darker and richer, with the same cool undertone. It gives the impression of a deeper, ‘ocean-like’ blue and works best where you want to add more visual impact: as an accent wall in the living room, bedroom, children’s room or bathroom.

How does the colour appear under warm and cool lighting?

  • Warm light (2700–3000 K): softens the coolness of blue, making it slightly warmer, closer to a delicate ‘blue-cream’ shade. Ideal for evening settings in the living room, bedroom or children’s room, where a cosy atmosphere is desired.
  • Cool light (4000 K and above): enhances the blue, cool undertone; the colour appears fresher, crisper and closer to ‘ocean’ blue. Well-suited to the bathroom, kitchen and workspace, where a sense of cleanliness and freshness is important.

Which colours go well with it (accent walls and furniture)

  • Warm white / light beige (NCS S 0502 Y, S 1005 Y40R) — a classic combination: soft blue + a light base. Suitable for living rooms, bedrooms, children’s rooms and bathrooms.
  • Pastel accents (soft pink, lavender, soft green) — create a light, ‘airy’ colour scheme for children’s rooms, bedrooms and small living rooms.
  • Deep blue / dark blue (S 4040 R80B, S 5040 R80B) — adds contrast and depth to furniture, picture frames and textiles in contemporary interiors.
  • Grey / graphite textiles — soften the ‘sweetness’ of blue, adding a contemporary and understated feel to living rooms, studies and hallways.
